I know that we as a team really strive to always greet and welcome our whanau when they come into the room to drop their child off. Atleast one kaiako will greet the parent(s) and ask them how they are or about their weekend. We also make sure that we say farewell to the parents and child at the end of the day. I know personally a big part of my practice is ensuring that I always tell the parents how their child’s day was, even this is just a quick conversation, I always make a point of seeking out parents from our room and letting them know how their childs day was.
We also involve parents by doing a termly newsletter which we hand out to parents, letting them know what their children have been up to as well as how they can be involved in the centre. In the past we have asked for parents help in gathering loose parts resources.
We also involve parents by filling out children’s day books. I know personally I make a point of ensuring my pepi’s day books are always filled out for the parents as they fill out the child’s morning so it is important we continue this communication and fill out their book with snippets from their day.
A lot of our team are friends with our parents and whanau outside of the centre and this is because we have developed such great relationships with our whanau. A few of our team also communicate with our parents via text and message outside of the centre on our personal phones as we have found this is a good means of communication with these parents and both ourselves and them feel comfortable in communicating this way.
